Since 2004 Marcelo and I have been organizing and accompanying students on overseas riding adventures. These trips are the highlight of our year and we seek to provide our students with a once in a lifetime fulfilling rider/traveler experience! We've had the pleasure of accompanying students to such countries as : England, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia and we are excited to add this year's location to our list!
WHO CAN GO ON THIS TRIP?
The requirements are simple!
1. Have finished 7th grade or higher in the summer of 2018.
2. Be a horse enthusiast.
3. Any one of the following :
i)Ride with WB Equestrian (Past or present)
ii)Be a Central Florida horse enthusiast and take one pre-trip Lesson at WB
iii)Be an International student with a prior relationship with WB
Why do we require you to have a lesson at WB? All of our trips involve some form of horse riding, to help us give you the best experience, we prefer to have a pre-trip knowledge of your riding level and style, so therefore we just ask those of you who do not ride at WB, just have one lesson with us so we can get a feel for your riding level.
WHERE DO WE STAY?
We choose hotels in safe areas, well-suited to our group size. The accommodations are located within walking distance of the main attractions. We prefer to stay in smaller family run settings, or private rented houses, building relationships with their owners. Students will stay in shared rooms with other students traveling with us.
CAN I BRING A FRIEND?
Absolutely! We just ask that if you come with a friend, you and your friend(s) are still open to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS PROGRAM?
We choose to take only a small number of students on each trip, we try to mix adventure, riding and culture together with the opportunity to experience another country with their peers. We try to emphasize riding, this trip will be all about experiencing the scenery of Portugal on horseback and the Portuguese way of riding.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
Ground transportation, accommodations, all breakfasts and dinners, chaperones and guides, trip related activities, trip related activity admissions, taxes and tips.
Not included (not intended to be an exhaustive list): Airfare, lunches, visas and visa application fees, beverages other than tap water, expenses incurred by the participant that are outside the trip description such as damage to hotels, excess baggage fees and the like, expenses related to unforeseen circumstances such as transportation strikes, natural disasters and the like, personal and medical expenses.
HOW DO THE OPTIONAL GROUP FLIGHTS WORK?
Our chosen flights will be listed online 10 months prior to departure. You are not required to take the group flight, although we do recommend it. The group flight is chaperoned and the students have the opportunity to meet and bond on the flight over. Parents are responsible for arranging for participants to get to the group flight airport. Chaperones are at the airport, greet arriving participants, and help them get to where the rest of the group has assembled. If you choose to fly separate from the group, it will be your responsibility to arrange your itinerary to line up with ours, for example we are unable to wait for long periods for other travelers to connect with the group as we have a strict itinerary we are following.
WHO ARE THE COUNSELORS ON THE TRIP?
Marcelo and Sally Barros, Owners of WB Equestrian, Parents of two children, horse industry professionals and seasoned travelers themselves have been the lead councilors of the WB Equestrian trips since their beginning back in the early 2000's. Our goal is to take a reasonable number of students each trip, providing a personal experience, as our trips grow we have begun bringing along our oldest adult age students as councilors in training.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE GROUP SIZE?
Group size is important! A smaller group size provides unique opportunities and a personal feel. We aim to get good group of students, always less than 15, allowing for friendships to be made, but always with a personal touch.
DO I NEED ANY VACCINATIONS FOR THIS TRIP?
We recommend that you check with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the areas you will be visiting. For more information, please check out the World Health Organization’s website www.who.int/en/.
HOW MUCH FREE TIME DO WE GET?
Our counselors are with the group very nearly all the time. We may break into smaller groups to do different activities, but there will be a chaperone with each group. We do offer some free time to do some shopping, for example, in defined areas that we are very familiar with. If participants are ever shopping by themselves within these defined areas they go in groups and for no more than an hour.
WHAT KIND OF VISA DO YOU NEED FOR THIS TRIP?
Any US citizen that enters Europe is automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.
DO I NEED TRAVELERS INSURANCE?
Yes. Every student will need to provide us with proof of purchased travelers insurance.
Safety is our number one priority. We choose locations we are familiar with, vetting locations and activities as well as keeping current on changing political situations.
As riding is what connects us, our trip always involve horses! Each trip we try to offer something a little different, so maybe it's a training trip, or a competition trip or a pleasure riding experience, no matter which trip we choose, all of our itineraries include horses!
While horses are our passion, travel is a close second! We build a well-rounded itinerary to include getting to know our host country, learning the history and culture, experiencing the food and giving our students the opportunity to really connect with their surroundings.
WHAT TRAVEL CAN DO FOR YOUR STUDENT
Students who have travelled with us in the past return with a new confidence about travelling overseas, the majority of our students building lasting friendships with people they meet on our trips, we have many students who opt to study aboard in college because they enjoyed our trips and some even have chosen international careers!
Thank you for your interest.
